Referrals
Sometimes your GP or nurse may wish to refer you to a secondary care (hospital) consultant or specialist for an opinion or for further tests. Most specialists' appointments are processed electronically but there may be occasions when the referral goes straight to a provider which does not have these options.
Following your consultation, the GP or nurse will dictate a letter to the consultant specialising in your problem. If your referral is dealt with via the e-referrals system, the referral letter will be processed and you will be contacted by a member of our admin team within a week of seeing the GP. They will advise you of your options, names of hospitals which offer the service, dates and times available. This is to enable you to choose a hospital, date and time which are convenient for you. At present we are not able to offer named consultants in all areas.
Not all hospitals offer every service and this will be discussed with you when your appointment is arranged. It is important, therefore, that you ensure we have an up-to-date, contactable daytime telephone number on your records so that we can contact you to arrange a suitable appointment. If we are unable to contact you we will make the appointment on your behalf.
Please remember to let our team know if you have private health insurance - you may get faster access to tests or treatment.
